After graduating from physical therapy school in 1991, I promptly wrecked my neck. I spent the next eight years worried that one wrong move, lifting someone wrong, or overdoing my exercises would flare it up. I had a lot of nerve pain and thought that was just something I was going to have to deal with.
Then, one day I found out about Aston kinetics. It gave me a new view on how to assess pain and assess alignment. It made me look at how I am stacked up and how others are stacked up in posture and movement. This gave me an open door to help look at the body differently – in a three dimensional way. Not only the typical motions that I had been taught to look at but tension patterns and how that can make a difference in how one area might feel pain. Relieving the tension patterns other places in the body could decrease pain. I realized there were things that I could do on my own that would make a huge difference in my pain.
Fast forward another 20 years, I’ve discovered this field of functional medicine, which looks at the underlying causes of pain, illness, and persistent problems that have not responded to traditional treatments. When it comes to back and neck pain, getting to the root cause of the inflammation that might be causing your pain is essential for recovery. Inflammation makes a huge difference in increasing your perception of pain and your mindset.
